Cameras for Haiti

The purpose of this project is to give the youths in LaVallée an opportunity to experience digital
photography on a basic level and to help give them a sense of place in their community as well as
learning the importance of documenting their families and history.

During my first trip to LaVallée I spent most of my time with the Docs in surgery and around

t
he Hospital and clinic. Everyone in the village knew I was there: “Madame with the cameras”.
Prior to that trip I purchased a small portable printer hoping I could win trust from the people
with my camera by taking pictures of them and giving them prints. Some mothers had no
photos of their children at all.

That first trip was just the beginning and I soon learned that many of the young people had

the wild desire to do what I do, so I started planning then that I would one day teach them
p
hotography.

One day as I was purchasing yet another digital camera I wondered what people did with their old
“not enough pixels” cameras and I decided I would find out if they would be willing to give them
up for my workshop in Haiti. Therefore, I am proposing to the
volunteers and friends of AHDH
a camera drive for my first digital camera workshop in LaVallée.

The camera must be in good working condition with a battery, charger and memory card. The
pixel number is not important but it must be able to output a quality image.

Finally, my plan is to have a photography exhibit for the
Young Photographers of Haiti in
Savannah, Ga, New Orleans, La., and Miami, Fl. With the large Haitian population in all three of
those cities I feel sure it will be a success. We are also planning a page on the AHDH web site for
the youths’
photography, information and biographies.

After the earthquakes started in Haiti on January 12th I knew I could not wait another season, that
I had to put my plan into action now. I am scheduled for Haiti in June and I hope to have in my
possession
Cameras for Haiti.
